Enero. La terrible ola de frío que azotó a los Estados Unidos y Canadá causó estragos, dañó propiedades y mató a una veintena de personas. Marzo. Los curas franciscanos llegaron a Jerusalén hace ocho siglos enviados por el mismísimo San Francisco de Asís (de quien el actual Papa tomó su nombre). Instalados en el convento de San Salvador, en la Ciudad Vieja, dirigen escuelas que reúnen a más de diez mil alumnos (la mitad de ellos, musulmanes). Aquí practican básquetbol con un grupo de chicos palestinos.

Abril. La muerte de Winnie Mandela –esposa del legendario Nelson Mandela–, ocurrida el 2 de abril, provocó conmoción en Sudáfrica. En un país atravesado por las más deleznables prácticas racistas, la imagen de esta mujer que se plantó contra el Apartheid es una de las más fuertes de esa región. Su casa de Soweto llamó la atención de estas niñas que hoy, afortunadamente, parecen vivir una realidad distinta.

Julio. El caso ocupó las portadas de todo el mundo: doce chicos pertenecientes a un equipo de fútbol quedaron atrapados en una caverna al norte de Tailandia. Durante 18 días permanecieron allí, sin saber qué desenlace tendría la historia. Finalmente pudieron salir sanos y salvos, pero un rescatista –Saman Kunan, de 38 años– falleció durante el operativo. Este fue el homenaje que le brindaron.

Y pese a la media sanción que el proyecto había conseguido en la Cámara de Diputados, no pudo lograr la aprobación entre los senadores. Octubre. El terremoto y el tsunami que asolaron Indonesia –en otra reacción de un planeta al que lastimamos– dejaron casi dos mil muertos, muchísimos heridos y 70 mil evacuados. Olas de seis metros, combinadas con el movimiento telúrico, devastaron ciudades. Y entre las imágenes más impresionantes se encuentra ésta, la de un barco entre las casas destruidas en Wani.

Noviembre. Las interminables caravanas que partieron desde América Central con seres humanos desesperados que huían de la violencia y la exclusión recorrieron miles de kilómetros hasta llegar a Tijuana, en la frontera México-Estados Unidos. Muchos siguen allí, en un limbo angustiante, ante el icónico muro, una herida abierta entre ambos países.

Diciembre. Las protestas por el aumento del combustible y la calidad de vida llevadas adelante por los “chalecos amarillos” le cambiaron la fisonomía a París. Como en un revival de las antiguas protestas que caracterizan su historia, coparon las calles de la capital francesa.
